The Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County opened a new Dinosaur Hall this summer. The permanent exhibit is a time machine that takes visitors back 65 million years and features more than 300 fossils and 20 full-scale articulated dinosaur skeletons. The museum project manager, Lexington Design + Fabrication and Coloredge New York - Los Angeles worked together for three months to plan the graphic elements for the permanent exhibit at the museum.
The 14,000 square-foot Dinosaur Hall opened in July with a variety of graphics ranging from wall coverings, floor graphics and display case graphics. Coloredge turned to its prototyping division, Comp24, to develop the graphics for the cases that enclose artifacts.
The Comp24 team used a special transfer process with photo-sensitive inks and exposed film negatives, applying 5-color transfers to large pieces of glass. An opacity layer was printed using the company’s Vutek GS3200 onto Avery SF 100-103 Ultra Clear polyester film. A subtle CMYK color build at 80 percent opacity was created. The Avery film was applied to the Comp24 transfers with a wet-mount process for added definition and the text was silkscreened by Sign-All in Los Angeles.
Avery SF-100-103 Ultra Clear is a high quality 2.0 mil, clear printable polyester film with a tinted synthetic liner with ultra removable adhesive. It is ideal for retail and museum applications.
The project garnered recognition for Coloredge at the 2011 SGIA Expo in New Orleans. Coloredge won the digital graphics-building graphics category of the Golden Image Competition.
